About MatchThatPaint
MatchThatPaint was built to solve a problem every homeowner hits at some point: you love a paint color from one brand, but you can only get another brand. Maybe the store near you only carries Sherwin Williams. Maybe the Benjamin Moore color you picked is perfect but your budget prefers Behr. Whatever the reason, you need to find the closest equivalent, and you need to see them side by side.
That's exactly what this site does. Enter a paint color from any major brand and instantly see the closest matches from every other brand. No guessing at the paint counter. No holding up fan decks in bad lighting. Just clear, visual, data-driven color matching.
How We Calculate Matches
Every match on this site is calculated using Delta E (CIE2000), the industry standard for measuring perceptual color difference. Here's how it works:
First, we collect the RGB color values for every paint color from manufacturer specifications and published color data. These are the values that paint companies publish on their websites, spec sheets, and fan deck documentation.
Next, we convert those RGB values to Lab color space (specifically CIE L*a*b*), which models colors the way human eyes actually perceive them, not the way screens display them.
Then we compute the Delta E (CIE2000) distance between every pair of colors across brands. A lower Delta E means the colors are more perceptually similar. A Delta E of 1 or less means most people can't tell the difference. A Delta E of 5+ means the colors are noticeably different.
This is math, not opinion. The same formula is used by paint manufacturers, automotive paint shops, and industrial color quality labs worldwide.
What We Include on Every Color Page
Every color profile on MatchThatPaint includes the hex code and RGB values for digital reference, the Light Reflectance Value (LRV) published by the manufacturer, undertone analysis based on manufacturer descriptions and color science, lighting behavior notes explaining how the color shifts in different rooms, best room recommendations, coordinating color suggestions, and cross-brand matches ranked by Delta E accuracy.
Our Data Sources
Color data (RGB, hex, LRV) comes from manufacturer websites, published spec sheets, and official fan deck documentation. Undertone descriptions draw from manufacturer color descriptions and established interior design references. Match calculations are pure math computed from publicly available color values. We are not affiliated with any paint manufacturer.
The Important Disclaimer
Colors on your screen are digital approximations. Your monitor's calibration, your room's lighting, and the paint's finish (flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss) all affect how a color looks in real life. We show colors on a pure white (#FFFFFF) background for the most accurate digital representation possible, but there is no substitute for a physical paint sample. Always test before you commit.
